If I had to choose between music, dance or photography, I would choose all three, for I am enchanted with music, thrilled by dance and redeemed by photography!

JOHN LENNON

John Lennon
Born: October 09, 1940
Died: December 08, 1980

Out of all the Beatles, John Lennon had the most interesting -- and frustrating -- solo career. Lennon was capable of inspired, brutally honest confessional songwriting and melodic songcraft; he also had a tendency to rest on his laurels, churning out straight-ahead rock & roll without much care. But the extremes, both in his music and his life, were what made him fascinating. Where Paul McCartney was content to be a rock star, Lennon dabbled in everything from revolutionary politics to the television talk-show circuit during the early '70s. After releasing a pair of acclaimed albums, John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band and Imagine, in the early '70s, Lennon sunk into an infamous "lost weekend" where his musical output was decidedly uneven and his public behavior was often embarrassing. Halfway through the decade, he sobered up and retired from performing to become a house-husband and father. In 1980, he launched a comeback with his wife Yoko Ono, releasing the duet album Double Fantasy that fall. Just as his career was on an upswing, Lennon was tragically assassinated outside of his New York apartment building in December of 1980. He left behind an enormous legacy, not only as a musician, but as a writer, actor and activist.

Imagine

Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace

You...
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope some day you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
Our brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope some day you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Perhaps the best song

Η φωτογραφία της εβδομάδας/Photo of the Week

IANNIS XENAKIS

 Biography
May 29, 1922 : Iannis is born in Braïla, Rumania to Clearchos Xenakis and Photini Pavlou, members of the Greek Diaspora (his actual birthday is uncertain: it may have been June1st, and the year may have been 1921). He is the eldest of three boys : his brother Cosmas became a painter and Jason became a professor of philosophy in the United States. Their father, a son of a farmer from Evvoia, was the director of an English import-export firm. Their mother, who spoke fluent French and German, was a good pianist. She gave Iannis a flute as a present when he was just a little boy and encouraged him to study music. The Xenakis couple attended the Bayreuth Festival several times during the 1920s.

A new production of Oresteϊa in Vienna
Why does a person kill another person? This is the theme of the Oresteïa. This trilogy of tragedies weaves a web of family-related, political and religious references to explain the spade of killings within one family, the house of the glorious general Agamemnon. Bloody violence dominates the stage, and what remains at the close is a question: will there ever be an end to the conflicts? Aeschylus’ drama, first performed in 458 B.C., impresses with its subtle exploration of the abyss lurking behind human actions. In his Oresteïa, Xenakis demonstrates intimate familiarity with ancient Greek drama. His composition is dominated by percussion, virtuoso baritone solos and the choir as protagonist. The unique archaising effect of his Oresteïa derives in particular from his focus on striking rhythms and the use of micro intervals.
In their approach to Aeschylus and Xenakis, director Carlus Padrissa, stage designer Roland Olbeter and Greek scholar Sabine Follinger aim both at the uncovering of historic traces and a contemporary interpretation of this ancient Greek tragedy in public space. The dramatisation by Carlus Padrissa, a member of the legendary, radical Catalan theatre group La Fura dels Baus, opts for effective pyrotechnics as a central design element.

1922–1947: Early years in Greece
Xenakis was born in Brăila, Romania. He was the eldest son of Klearchos Xenakis, a Greek businessman from Euboea, and Fotini Pavlou from Lemnos. His parents were both interested in music, and it was Fotini who introduced the young Xenakis to music. Her early death, when the boy was only five years old, was a traumatic experience that, in his own words, "deeply scarred" the future composer.[3] He was subsequently educated by a series of governesses, and then, in 1932, sent to a boarding school on the Aegean island of Spetsai, Greece. He sang at the school's boys' choir, where the repertoire included works by Palestrina, and Mozart's Requiem, which Xenakis memorized in its entirety.[4] It was also at the Spetsai school that Xenakis studied notation and solfège, and became enamored with Greek traditional and sacred music.[4]
In 1938, after graduating from the Spetsai school, Xenakis moved to Athens to prepare for entrance exams at the National Technical University of Athens. Although he intended to study architecture and engineering, he also took lessons in harmony and counterpoint with Aristotelis Koundouroff.[5] In 1940 he successfully passed the exams, but his studies were cut short by the Greco-Italian War, which began with the Italian invasion on 28 October 1940. Although Greece eventually won the war, it was not long before the German army joined the Italians in the Battle of Greece, in April 1941. This led to the Axis occupation of Greece during World War II, which lasted until late 1944, when the Soviet Army began its drive across Romania, forcing the Axis forces to slowly withdraw. Xenakis joined the communist National Liberation Front early during the war, participating in mass protests and demonstrations, and later becoming part of armed resistance—this last step was a painful experience Xenakis refused to discuss until much later in life.[6][7] After the Axis forces left, Churchill ordered that British forces step in to help restore the monarchy; they were opposed by the Democratic Army of Greece, and the country plunged into a civil war. In December 1944, during the period of Churchill's martial law,[8] Xenakis (who was by then a member of the communist students' company of the left-wing Lord Byron faction of ELAS) became involved in street fighting against British tanks. He was gravely wounded when a shell hit his face; that Xenakis survived the injury has been described as a miracle.[9] He survived seriously scarred, and lost his left eye.[10]
