If I had to choose between music, dance or photography, I would choose all three, for I am enchanted with music, thrilled by dance and redeemed by photography!

Have a little patience / Κάνε λιγάκι υπομονή / V.Tsitsanis

Have a little patience/Vasilis Tsitsanis
Translating these lyrics, is a humbling exercise in poetic futility: the sheer strength of each well chosen word, the utter simplicity of the expression, the raw lyricism, the boiling emotion, the
brutally honest allegory of this masterpiece by Vasilis Tsitsanis, written in the stormy year of 1948, is absolutely breath taking: far beyond being merely a wonderfully soothing song, it expressed the desperate cry of the Greek people in the middle of the civil war, their unending drama...world war II, triple occupation by the axis powers, famine, partisan wars and nazi reprisals, executions, followed after 1944 by a destructive civil war...the young men fighting on the mountains, the girls wasting their youth away waiting for them to return...all they wanted by then was some dim glimmer of hope, some ray of light, in the brutal darkness that was the dramatic 1940's for Greece...things would at some point get better...if they could only be a little bit patient!

Grigoris Bithikotsis, Kaiti Grey, Eleftheria Arvanitaki

Music:Vasilis Tsitsanis
Vocal: Grigoris Bithikotsis, Kaiti Grey, Eleftheria Arvanitaki

Don't fall in despair for he won'’t be late
at the crack of dawn he'll come by you
to beg from you a new love's beginning
be just a bit patient

Push the cloudy darkness away from your heart
and don’t lose your sleep sobbing all night
what if he is not in your cuddly arms as yet
he'’ll come one day, don'’t you forget that

Some sweet daybreak he'll awake you
and your love for each other will resurrect
a new love will bloom again
be just a bit patient

About ''Rempetiko''
Rembetika music is the music of the Greek Underground. It originated in the hashish dens of Pireaus and Thessaloniki around the turn of the 20th century and was influenced by oriental
Vasilis Tsitsanis-Kaiti Grey
elements that came with the forced immigration of 2 million Greek refugees from Asia Minor. It gave way to Greek Popular Music ('Laika' in Greek) which used the same instruments in similar ways during the early 1950s. This page will give you a brief introduction to Rembetika music and hopefully inspire you to explore more deeply into it.
If you are hearing music as you read this then you are in luck. This means you can click on the links to songs and hear them as well. The songs I have chosen are my favorites, some old rembetika, some new rembetika and some laika which is what rembetika metamorphosed into with influences from all other types of Greek music. I have used mostly later recordings of the songs because the sound quality is better and they are more likely to get you to go out and start your collection. If you have a high-speed connection you should be able to get these songs loaded pretty quickly. If you are on a dial-up don't bother. Just read the text.

Greek Music: Rembetika Lyrics

Many non-Greek-speaking people who listen to Rembetika and Laika music from Greece find that they can enjoy it without knowing what the lyrics mean. But eventually people begin to ask what the songs are about. So rather than me sitting down with my trusty Greek-English dictionary and using my faulty Greek skills to try to translate words that in many places come from the heart and soul of the composer I asked three friends to do it for me. Dorian Kokas is well known as a facilitator who helps people cut through the Greek bureaucracy but he is also a well-known singer-songwriter-musician himself and performed in the group Agapanthos in the seventies. His partner in the group was Roulis Trifonas, also an old friend of mine and a fine musician and poet. Holly Kokas, Dorian's beautiful and very smart daughter is the third member of the group. I gave them a list of songs and asked them to translate them into English. Sorry I don't have the Greek lyrics. If you click on the titles you can hear the songs. Some of the lyrics were unclear and we had to guess at them.

Μανώλης Ρασούλης/Manolis Rasoulis

Manolis Rasoulis -Two Years after
Ach, Greece, I love you
Voc.Lyrics: Manolis Rasoulis

Best wishes to the Greek who forgets
and in the middle of Chicago lives in freedom
the one who does not know and does not love
- are you sure it isn't your fault as well, miserable wretch? -
and in Athens too, he lives in exile.

Ach, Greece, I love you
and deeply thank you,
because you taught me and I know
how to go on breathing wherever I happen to be
to die wherever I happen to step,
and not endure you.

Ach, Greece, let me tell you, before you crow like a cock,
you deny me thirteen times.
You push me around, you bully me, you kick me like a stray dog, and you hang yourself above me.

The sweetest home is the heart
- Odysseas, come back to me! -
whose holy soil is pain and joy

Each single one is one [alone] in his boundary of pain
and I am just a someone who takes you for a walk.

Ach, Greece, I love you and deeply thank you,
because you taught me and I know
how to go on breathing wherever I happen to be
to die wherever I happen to step, and not endure you.

Ach, Greece, let me tell you, before you crow like a cock,
you deny me thirteen times.
You push me around, you bully me, you kick me like a stray dog, and you hang yourself above me.

Ach, Greece, I love you/Αχ Ελλάδα σ΄αγαπώ

Sonia Theodoridou - God Abandons Antony/Απολείπειν ο Θεός Aντώνιον

God abandons Antony
When suddenly, at midnight, you hear
an invisible procession going by
with exquisite music, voices,
don’t mourn your luck that’s failing now,
work gone wrong, your plans
all proving deceptive—don’t mourn them uselessly.
As one long prepared, and graced with courage,
say goodbye to her, the Alexandria that is leaving.
Above all, don’t fool yourself, don’t say
it was a dream, your ears deceived you:
don’t degrade yourself with empty hopes like these.
As one long prepared, and graced with courage,
as is right for you who were given this kind of city,
go firmly to the window
and listen with deep emotion, but not
with the whining, the pleas of a coward;
listen—your final delectation—to the voices,
to the exquisite music of that strange procession,
and say goodbye to her, to the Alexandria you are losing.
