If I had to choose between music, dance or photography, I would choose all three, for I am enchanted with music, thrilled by dance and redeemed by photography!

Charles Camilleri (1931-2009)

Charles Camilleri
Maybe the Turkish Admiral Piri Reis or Hairedin Barbarosa, did not find Malta and gave the momorable "Malta yiok", which translates to "Malta not found"..we found and recognized a great man of the arts. The composer Charles Camilleri.

Charles Camilleri (Malta 7 September 1931- Malta 3 January 2009) was one of the few native Maltese composers to have succeeded in making a significant impression in international musical circles. He was largely self-taught, and his ability to draw on diverse cultural traditions and marry them in an eclectic yet highly individual style proved particularly persuasive.

Camilleri was born in Hamrun, Malta in 1931. Despite early musical promise while at the Lyceum High School, he was initially destined for a career in law. However, in 1950, when the family emigrated to Australia, his somewhat unconventional career began in earnest with a brief period as a school teacher. Later on, a stint as a piano player in an ensemble that performed in Hong Kong, Japan, Korea and San Francisco nurtured the inherent nomadic instincts that were to stay with him for the rest of his life.

Charles Camilleri (1931-2009) : Summer Nights in Malta, concertino for two pianos and Strings (1960)

For five years, from 1954 to 1959, based for the first time in London, he earned his living as a successful light-music arranger, composer and conductor. Here, in addition to his many distinctive film scores, he also created the incidental music for the Strand Theatre's award-winning show Sailor Beware. His next move was to Toronto, where after working for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, he enrolled at the local university to study music.

In 1965, returning once again to England, Camilleri now felt confident enough to focus exclusively on composition. Growing critical acclaim then allowed him the freedom to undertake many fruitful artistic collaborations with the leading performers of the day.

Particularly pivotal in this regard was the organist Gillian Weir, who during the course of 1970 helped to create Missa Mundi, his first major work for the organ. Cogently argued, highly articulate and inspired by the writings of the Jesuit theologian, Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, this difficult and demanding five-movement technical tour de force remains an important contribution to the repertoire. Later essays for organ included Invocation to the Creator (1973), Wine of Peace (1976), Morphogenesis (1978), Toccata Britannica (1978) and a Concerto for Organ, Strings and Percussion, first performed by John Scott at the 1983 Three Choirs Festival.

Camilleri's huge corpus of works comfortably exceeds some 300compositions. Although stylistically diverse, they break down into three main creative periods, each of which produced a piano concerto. The first, dating from 1948, is titled "Mediterranean" and reflects an early and highly productive interest in the indigenous folk music of the Maltese archipelago; the second, premiered as part of Expo in Japan in 1970, is headed "Maqam", an Arabic form of extemporisation; the third, "Leningrad", cyclical, austere and somewhat abstract, was first performed in Russia in 1987.

Four years earlier, in 1983, Camilleri had returned home permanently to his creative roots at Naxxar. Here, alongside his still considerable musical output, in 1988, under the aegis of Unesco, he published a book of writings, suitably entitled Mediterranean Music. In 1992, having been at the forefront of the island's cultural life for over half a century, he proved a most appropriate choice as the first Professor of Music at the University of Malta.

Charles Villiers Stanford

Biography
Sir Charles Villiers Stanford (30 September 1852 – 29 March 1924) was an Irish composer, teacher and conductor. Born to a well-off and highly musical family in Dublin, Stanford was educated at the University of Cambridge before studying music in Leipzig and Berlin. He was instrumental in raising the status of the Cambridge University Musical Society, attracting international stars to perform with it.
While still an undergraduate, Stanford was appointed organist of Trinity College, Cambridge. In 1882, aged 29, he was one of the founding professors of the Royal College of Music, where he taught composition for the rest of his life. From 1887 he was also the professor of music at Cambridge. As a teacher, Stanford was sceptical about modernism, and based his instruction chiefly on classical principles as exemplified in the music of Brahms. Among his pupils were rising composers whose fame went on to surpass his own, such as Gustav Holst and Ralph Vaughan Williams. As a conductor, Stanford held posts with the Bach Choir and the Leeds triennial music festival.
Stanford composed a substantial number of concert works, including seven symphonies, but his best-remembered pieces are his choral works for church performance, chiefly composed in the Anglican tradition. He was a dedicated composer of opera, but none of his nine completed operas has endured in the general repertory. Some critics regarded Stanford, together with Hubert Parry and Alexander Mackenzie, as responsible for a renaissance in English music. However, after his conspicuous success as a composer in the last two decades of the 19th century, his music was eclipsed in the 20th century by that of Edward Elgar as well as former pupils.

Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, Op. 126
The opening of his Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, Op. 126 is surely reminiscent of Rachmaninov's Second Concerto which Stanford had conducted at the Leeds Festival, with Rachmaninov himself as soloist, only a few months before he started work on his own composition. The concerto is dedicated to 'Two friends on either side of the Atlantic: Carl Stoeckel of Norfolk, Conn., USA and Robert Finnie McEwen of Bardrochat'. Although completed in July 1911, the concerto was not performed until June 1915 when it was heard at the Festival of American music at Norfolk, Connecticut, whose president was Carl Stoeckel, musical patron and son of the longstanding Professor of Music at Yale Gustave J. Stoeckel. The soloist on that occasion was the London-born pianist Harold Bauer and the conductor the eminent American Arthur Mees. The British premiere had to wait until a concert in Bournemouth in December 1916, while the London premiere, with the young Benno Moiseiwitsch, took place on 29 April 1919 at Queen's Hall to very considerable acclaim.

Stanford did not write an extended cadenza in either of the large-scale concertante works recorded here. Although 'Cadenza' is marked twice in Down among the Dead Men (at the very opening and at the end of Variation VII), both are brief, and in the concerto there is no cadenza at all. The concerto is one of the most romantic by a British composer, the glorious first movement opening with the soloist at first unaccompanied, but soon joined by the horns whose rising motif proves to be a motto that will recur at the end of the concerto. The first subject group is completed by a rising figure in the strings and an upward leaping dotted idea. After this virile start the sudden contrast of the second subject is perfectly judged: the piano sings out a heart-felt theme with a rocking accompaniment in the left hand.

A particularly effective moment occurs during the development in a Molto tranquillo section where the piano is joined by solo cello and two clarinets. The second movement is characterised by chordal piano writing, marked to be played arpeggiando throughout. The serene melody is shortly contrasted in an equally poised middle section. If there are Irish inflections in this work, they are to be found in the repeated notes of this quiet music, which would seem to evoke some distant folksong. The finale starts loud and brash with a stamping dance tune. Two quieter sections follow, the second revisiting the music of the slow movement. With the opening horn call the stamping tune returns and propels the concerto to a vigorous conclusion.

The lost piano concerto of Pavel Pabst
PAVEL PABST: PIANO CONCERTO in B-flat Major (Concert World Premiere Recording). SERGEI RACHMANINOV: PAGANINI RHAPSODY. PETER TCHAIKOVSKY: FANTASY OVERTURE HAMLET. Total playing time:76.24. PANAGIOTIS TROCHOPOULOS (piano) BELARUS STATE ACADEMIC SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA MARIUS STRAVINSKY (conductor). A SUPERB DIGITAL RECORDING.
In 1885, pianist PAVEL PABST gave the premiere performance of his new Piano Concerto in E-flat major in St Petersburg with the great Anton Rubinstein conducting. The concerto score was lost for 120 years.
THE LOST CONCERTO was performed in concert, for the first time since its premiere, in April 2005, in Minsk, and in the 150th anniversary year of the birth of PABST, and that public performance is the one presented, unedited, on this CD. PABST's PIANO CONCERTO is a wonderful, romantic three-movement work, lasting 33 minutes. It is full of beautiful tunes. It now takes its rightful place among the great 19th-century concertos on CD with this unique concert recording, and receives stunning debut performances for this digital pure-stereo recording by the brilliant young musicians, pianist PANAGIOTIS TROCHOPOULOS, and British conductor MARIUS STRAVINSKY. Close friends and musical associates of PABST in Moscow, SERGEI RACHMANINOV AND PETER TCHAIKOVSKY, were chosen as the composers for the other works. All the sessions were filmed and a DVD is in the course of preparation. It is planned to be released in April 2009. MUSIC-WEB INTERNATIONAL has graced this CD as RECORD OF THE MONTH with its review of November 22, 2006. "Cameo scores a coup..with this release..it is thoroughly enjoyable and ably played by Panagiotis Trochopoulos..for a live recording, the audience is hardly ever discernable, to the point that the applause at the end comes as a bit of a surprise."

"Mano’s", Jazz tribute to Manos Hadjidakis
A jazz tribute to Manos Hatzidakis, the Camerata Orchestra and the Dimitris Kalantzis Quintet will perform some of the composer’s best-loved compositions in a new jazz idiom. ‘The project developed quite naturally out of our need to perform music which we had loved since we were young, in our own ordinary language: jazz. The essence of Manos’ music is always there, and we always delight in discovering it’, says the outstanding musical talent Dimitris Kalantzis. The original idea is implemented with the aesthetic quality appropriate to an artist of the standing of Manos Hatzidakis, and has the added advantage of opening up to a Greek audience a combination of jazz and classical sounds, through a repertory of music familiar to Greek audiences. At the same time, the international idiom of jazz is the perfect vehicle for bringing the music of great Greek composers to global audiences.Dimitris Kalantzis Quintet and Camerata In a tribute to Manos Hatzidakis on November 21, 2011 - Pallas Theater.

ο album “Mano’s”, a jazz tribute to Manos Hadjidakis,
Το έργο “Mano’s”, a jazz tribute to Manos Hadjidakis, παρουσιάστηκε με εξαιρετική επιτυχία και ενθουσιώδεις κριτικές στις 15 Ιανουαρίου και 21 Ιουνίου του 2011, στο Μέγαρο Μουσικής Αθηνών.
